Writing Content can be difficult especially if you are just starting out. But everyone has to begin somewhere. I’m sharing my Cheatsheet with you so that you can too, begin writing kickass content even if you are a complete beginner. So let’s break down the process into steps, shall we?
1. Start with Research
Before writing any piece of content, you need to do thorough research on the topic, or else how would you know about that topic, right? The best sources for researching on any subject are blogs, articles, books, podcasts, youtube videos, content creators, product descriptions, and more.
2. Build a Structure
A structure or outline is very important before you start writing your actual content. A kickass piece of content is one that is easily skimmable and the reader gets the gist even if they don’t read the whole thing. Because let’s face it, people don’t really have the time to go through the whole thing and are always looking for something crisp due to their less attention span. Use Headings and subheadings to structure your content and make it skimmable.
3. Start Writing
Once you’re sorted with the structure bit, start writing everything that you have found through research in your own words. Keep referencing different sources while writing. Keep your article interesting and engaging so that people would want to read it further. Imagine yourself to be the reader. Would you actually like to read what you’re writing?
4. Mind-blowing Heading
Write a killer headline so that your audience finds it irresistible to click on it. Use power words, numbers, emotions like greed or pain, and always, always use FOMO because we don’t wanna miss out, right? For example, 10 things you should stop doing now if you want to be rich. – This headline has a number, invokes curiosity, targets your emotion to be rich, and includes FOMO.
5. Hooking Intro
Make your first sentence the best sentence. Create a powerful and engaging introduction to hook your audience with it. Invoke curiosity and talk about the juicy benefits they will get if they read further. Mention your keywords and focus on the main subject.
6. Single Purpose
Narrow the focus of your article and be specific with what is it that you are writing, Being specific will engage the right audience. your article/content should have a single focus.
7. Write in your unique voice and tone
Your brand represents your unique voice and tone which no one else has. For example, Zomato has a friendly, funny, and witty tone. they use that approach everywhere. similarly, using your brand voice will build authority.
8. Answer your Audience
Write for your audience and answer their questions. By providing the knowledge that your audience is looking for, you can build trust, authority, and credibility. For example, if you are a clothing store, your audience may want to know what sizes you sell or what are styles available at your store. You can answer these questions while writing your content. You can have a blog for your online store where you can write a blog about choosing the right size of jeans and so on.
9. SEO-friendly check
Make sure you make your content SEO-friendly to increase visibility and be found by Google. But let’s keep it organic, shall we? Don’t stuff it with keywords or it will look strange. Let it flow organically.
10. Editing & Proofreading
Lastly, edit your content and check for grammar, spelling, and plagiarism. Make sure your content is in flow and check for ease of readability. Break up larger paragraphs into smaller ones. Our brains love simplified info, isn’t it? You can also replace some words in your content with more interesting, or powerful words.
Remember, this is a guideline I follow to write any piece of content, be it a blog article, web content, or newsletter. I hope you found this Cheatsheet helpful and now have a fair idea to start or improve your content game.
